The Principles Behind Our Field Notes

Polarbuddiescrateclev.baby is an independent information website for thoughtful polar photographers. We connect respectful observation with reliable equipment handling and a more deliberate approach to light.

01 / OUR STARTING POINT

The photograph is optional.

Wildlife does not need to perform for a visitor. We place room to feed, rest, travel and care for young ahead of a closer portrait. Waiting, withdrawing and leaving the camera packed are valid photographic decisions.

Our guides are written for readers who want useful preparation without a promise that the right accessory can eliminate risk or guarantee an encounter.

02 / EQUIPMENT HONESTY

No universal field recipe.

Cold-weather runtime, water resistance and exposure decisions depend on real conditions and exact equipment. We distinguish general guidance from manufacturer specifications.

03 / CLEAR LIMITS

Not an expedition operator.

We do not book travel, provide guiding, certify equipment or offer emergency support. These pages are educational, not field-safety training.

04 / EDITORIAL METHOD

Explain the decision, not just the setting.

We prefer reasons and checks over rigid numbers: why a route must remain open, why cold cells should not be charged, and why a histogram needs interpretation. Current local instructions and product manuals take precedence over general articles.

We do not claim first-hand testing or field experience that is not documented. Equipment renders are conceptual illustrations, not evidence of product performance or endorsements.

Sources worth checking directly

Conditions and requirements change. Consult original sources before travel, especially for wildlife restrictions, protected-area access, batteries and transport. Useful starting points include the Governor of Svalbard, AECO, the Norwegian Polar Institute and Parks Canada.

For Greenland, investigate the current requirements of the relevant local authorities and your operator rather than applying Svalbard rules. For Alaska, consult the appropriate land manager, such as the National Park Service, where applicable. Community guidance and local access arrangements matter alongside formal regulations.

Camera manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Sony, OM SYSTEM and Fujifilm publish product-specific instructions. Those instructions—not a generic cold-weather article—should guide operating limits, cleaning and charging. Mention of an organisation or brand does not imply affiliation, approval or sponsorship.

Corrections and questions

If a passage seems unclear, outdated or too broad, tell us which page and statement you mean. Include an authoritative source where possible, but do not share sensitive wildlife coordinates or personal travel documents. We can consider editorial feedback; we cannot promise an individual response or a particular review date.
